Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for a united fight against terrorism terming it a new global vice. Speaking at the inauguration of the 136th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Dhaka last night, Hasina said humanity is facing new vices. Militancy and Terrorism costs lives and impedes peace and development.
Emphasizing that militancy is not a problem of any one particular country, she said it needs to be fought unitedly and collectively. Hasina also emphasized the fight against hunger and malnutrition. Emphasizing that over 800 million people across the world suffer from malnutrition and a large number of children in developing countries suffer from stunted growth due to poor nutrition, she said a little bit of support, compassion and empathy can make the globe hunger-free.
Talking about climate change she urged developing countries to fulfill their promise of financial help and technology transfer specially to countries like Bangladesh that are most vulnerable. The Inter Parliamentary Union Assemby held in Bangladesh for the first time is being attended by 53 Speakers, 40 Deputy Speakers and around 1348 delegates including MPs from 131 countries around the globe. The theme of the session is : Redressing Inequalities: Delivering on Dignity and Well-being for All.
The four–day mega conference whose deliberations begin today promises to focus on ways and means to end political and economic inequality and uphold democractic values and human rights. The Conference will also adopt a resolution to guarantee the financial inclusion of women as drivers of development. Indian Nobel Peace Prize Laureate will deliver the keynote address in this morning’s session.
