Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin today dissolved the 12th Jatiya Sangsad formed through the January 7 national election.

“President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the Jatiya Sangsad in line with the decision taken in the meetings with chiefs of three services, leaders of different political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement,” said a press release signed by Mohammed Shiplu Jaman, deputy press secretary of the press wing of the President’s Office.

Besides, BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was freed. The process of releasing the people detained during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement from July 1, 2024 to August 5, 2024 has started and many of them have already been released, said the press release. 

Separate Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Courts today granted bail to around 2,200 men including leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in cases lodged over recent turmoil across the
country marking quota reform movement.

The accused that have been granted bail include BNP standing committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam Khan, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Shamsur Rahman alias Shimul Biswas, Saiful Alam Nirob, Rafikul Alam Maznu, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam
Parwar and Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman Andaleev Rahman Partho.

Thousands of people had been arrested across the country as agitated students took to the streets, demanding reform quota in government jobs.

Reshuffle in top ranks in Army

Bangladesh Army has made a reshuffle in its top posts. Major General Ziaul Ahsan has been dismissed from the service, said an ISPR press release today.

It said Lieutenant General Md Saiful Alam has been posted to Foreign Ministry, Lieutenant General Md Mujibur Rahman has been appointed as GOC, Army Training and Doctrine Command, Lieutenant General Ahmed Tabrez Shams Chowdhury as Quartermaster General of Army, Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shameem as Chief of General Staff and Lieutenant General Mohammad Shaheenul Haque as Commandant, NDC.

Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman has been appointed as NTMC director general. inputs from BSS
