Bangladesh is seeking to open a “new chapter” in its relations with India, signalling a shift from the trajectory followed during former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said on Monday. His remarks came after Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat.
“The kind of relations that existed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure will no longer continue. That chapter is over,” Kabir told reporters. He said discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, with diesel imports through pipelines from India emerging as a priority area. “If positive relations are maintained, many challenges can be resolved. We are hopeful about advancing energy imports through pipelines,” he said.
Kabir also confirmed that a delegation, including Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, will visit India on Tuesday to attend the upcoming Indian Ocean Conference. During the visit, meetings are expected with India’s external affairs minister and security officials, where key bilateral issues such as border killings and other pending matters will be discussed, he added.
