The government of Bangladesh launched a nationwide COVID vaccination campaign on Tuesday to mark the birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The campaign aims to vaccinate 75 lakh people. The government has deputed 80, 000 health workers including 48,000 volunteers for the vaccination campaign in the country.

Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Abul Basher Mohammad Khurshid told the official news agency BSS that the campaign started at 9 in the morning. The day-long vaccination campaign may be extended if the target is not achieved in a day due to some reason.

Bangladesh has provided the first dose of vaccine to more than 2.48 crore people while 1.64 crore people have received both the doses of the vaccine till Monday, 27 September.

Bangladesh has decided to procure 16.5 crore vaccines from various sources for inoculating 80 percent of its population by 2022. Till now it has procured over 5.19 crore doses of the vaccine for the people of Bangladesh. It received another consignment of 25 lakh doses of Pfizer vaccine from the US as a gift on Tuesday bringing the total to 90 lakh doses.

Meanwhile, the COVID situation in Bangladesh remained under control with the sample positivity rate recorded below 5 percent on Monday. The country saw 25 deaths and 1212 new cases of COVID 19 on Monday.
