Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a nationwide protest campaign pressing for electoral reforms ahead of the next national election.
The party will hold a mass rally on Friday and submit memorandums to all deputy commissioners on Sunday to press home its five-point demand, including holding the national polls in February under the July framework.
Jamaat Secretary General Golam Parwar urged leaders and activists to “actively participate,” warning that government inaction would “compel the public to intensify their movement in pursuit of legitimate rights.”
The party is also pushing for a Proportional Representation (PR) system in both parliamentary houses to ensure inclusivity, and for a level playing field for all parties. It has demanded trials of those responsible for “oppression, mass killings, and corruption under the fascist regime,” and called for a ban on the activities of the Awami League’s former allies, including the Jatiya Party and the 14-party alliance, accusing them of backing autocracy.
Jamaat leaders said their reform campaign seeks to ensure “free, fair, and fear-free elections” to restore democratic credibility in Bangladesh.
