The High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami paid tribute to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh at the National Martyrs Monument in Savar on Saturday before leaving Dhaka to take up his new assignment as the High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom.

After visiting the Martyr’s memorial, Doraiswami tweeted that it was his tribute to the millions who died so that Bangladesh could live free from oppression.

The High Commissioner also visited the memorial of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at in Dhaka to pay his respect to the Father of the nation of Bangladesh who inspired Bangla people and Indians to rise and liberate Bangladesh.

On his last day in Dhaka as High Commissioner, Vikram Doraiswami also visited the 12th-century historic Dhakeshwari Temple and met community leaders.

The Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and Mahanagar Sarbojanin Puja Committee organised a farewell and felicitation ceremony at the Dhakeshwari temple in his honour.

High Commissioner Doraiswami also paid obeisance at the historic Gurudwara Nanak Shahi in Dhaka on Saturday. Guru Nanak Dev ji had visited Dhaka and stayed at this place where a Gurudwara was built later in the 19th century.

The 9th Guru Tegh Bahadur had also visited this place and his wooden sandals are kept as a historical artefact in the Gurudwara.

Vikram Doraiswami had joined as High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh in October 2020.

The new High Commissioner, Senior Foreign Service officer Pranay Kumar Verma is expected to join Dhaka as the new High Commissioner of India shortly.
