Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia remains under intensive observation at a Dhaka hospital after developing severe breathing difficulties caused by an infection that has spread to her heart and lungs, her medical team said.

She was admitted on Sunday at 8pm. Specialist Professor Dr. Shahabuddin Talukdar is supervising her treatment. “She has a chest infection… The infection has now spread to her heart and lungs, causing severe breathing difficulties,” said Professor FM Siddiqui, a member of the medical board. Doctors have administered antibiotics and other medicines and decided to keep her under close monitoring for 24 hours.

BNP sources said her son and the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman, along with his wife Zubaida Rahman, are monitoring her condition from London, while Syeda Shamila Rahman, widow of her late son Arafat Rahman, is by her side in Dhaka.

Nearly 80-year-old Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, has long suffered from liver cirrhosis, kidney complications, heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. She returned to Dhaka on May 6 after 117 days of treatment in London and has been hospitalised multiple times since.
