Bangladesh two militants were killed in a gunfight with police during a pre-dawn raid in Dhaka today. One of whom Nurul Islam alias Marjan was the mastermind of last year’s terror attack at a popular cafe in Dhaka.
Chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police confirmed that Neo-Jamaat-ul Mujahideen’s wanted leader Nurul Islam and another unidentified extremist were killed in Mohammadpur Beribadh area of the capital. Police said, Marjan coordinated the July 1st attack last year when militants had stormed Gulshan Cafe and killed 20 people including an Indian. The attackers had taken diners and restaurant staff hostage and had confrontations with police, killing two police officials.
Marzan’s wife Afrin was among three arrested following a police raid in Azimpur area of Dhaka on September 10th. So far police have killed at least 40 militants linked to the Gulshan Cafe terror attack. Police sources said, 22-yead old Marjan, a former Islami Chhatra Shibir leader at Chittagong University took over the leadership of IS-affiliated Neo-JMB following the killing of its military and operational commander Bangladeshi-Canadian Tamim Choudhury on August 27. While Tamim Chowdhury planned the attack, it was Marjan who masterminded its operational success including uploading the grisly pictures of the gruesome attack.
