UN launches aid appeal for Rohingya refugees

Bangladesh has banned Telecom companies from selling mobile phone connections to Rohingya refugees, citing security concerns for the latest restrictions. Bangladesh’s four mobile phone providers were threatened with fines if they provide any of the nearly 4 lakh 30,000 newly arrived refugees from Myanmar with phone plans while the ban is in force.

A senior officer at the Telecoms Ministry today said, for the time being, Rohingyas can not buy any SIM cards.
Junior telecoms minister Tarana Halim said, the decision to impose a communication blackout was justified for security reasons.
