National Citizen Party (NCP) Joint Convener Tajnuva Jabeen on Sunday resigned from her post and withdrew from the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election, expressing strong opposition to the party’s move to form an alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.
Announcing her decision in a Facebook post just before the nomination deadline, Tajnuva said she was “deeply frustrated” with the party’s policy-making process. “With a broken heart, I must say that I cannot take part in the upcoming national election,” she wrote, accusing the NCP of prioritising “political strategy over ideology” and fostering a culture of “betrayal of trust”. She pledged to refund all campaign donations, saying, “I will return your donations one by one. Every single penny will be refunded.” Despite quitting the party, Tajnuva said her struggle for democratic transformation would continue. Her resignation came amid deep internal divisions within the NCP over Jamaat alliance. Party sources said 170 central committee leaders have backed the move, with 122 submitting individual letters to party convener Nahid Islam. NCP Joint Chief Coordinator Md Arifur Rahman Tuhin confirmed the development, saying more letters were expected.
The signatories include Senior Joint Convenor Ariful Islam Adeeb, Sarowar Tushar, Dr Atik Mujahid, Javed Rasin and others. In their letters, they said any alliance decision taken by the leadership would be in the interest of democratic transformation and party unity.
However, Senior Joint Convener Samantha Sharmin warned that Jamaat was “not a dependable ally” and that any seat-sharing arrangement could make the NCP “pay a heavy price”. She said Jamaat’s ideology was incompatible with NCP’s core principles of justice, state reform and constituent assembly elections.
