Many parts of Gujarat today witnessed total strike in protest against the atrocities on Dalit youths in Una. Barring sporadic incidents of stone pelting in some parts of the state, the demonstrations by the Dalit community remained by and large peaceful.
The widespread protest erupted following thrashing of Dalit youths of Samadhiyala near Una for allegedly skinning a dead cow. One policeman, injured in stone pelting by mob, succumbed to injuries. Authorities have cancelled the State Transport services in Amreli and Junagadh districts following stone pelting and attack on public transport by mobs yesterday.
Atrocities on Dalits in Gujarat rocks Parliament
According to police sources 7 more accused in this case have been arrested by the police. With this, a total of 16 persons have been nabbed. The case of atrocities and attempt to murder have been registered against them. Crime Branch of state CID is investigating the case.
Chief Minister Anandiben Patel visited the Samadhiyala village of Una in Gir Somnath District today. She met the family members of the victims and assured for strict action against the culprits. Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Ramanlal Vora and Chief Secretary GR Aloria accompanied the Chief Minister.
