The flood situation in Assam is grim with overnight heavy rainfall across several parts of the state, and nearly 34 thousand people are affected in the first wave of floods in at least 11 districts.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a ‘Red Alert’ and predicted ‘very heavy’ to ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall across several districts of Assam till Thursday.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Cachar, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts are affected by floods. At present, 142 villages are under water and 1,511 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across the state. The flood situation in Lower Assam is likely to be worsened as excessive waters has been released from the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant reservoir in Kuricchu River in Bhutan.
Official sources said that Lakhimpur is the worst hit district with over 25 thousand people affected. District administration is running one relief camp, besides operating 16 relief distribution centres in 3 districts.
The flood water damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged in several districts. Flood water also disrupted roads and vehicular movement at flood hit areas.
NDRF and SDRF teams have also been deployed for rescue and relief.
