In Assam, security forces seized demonetized currency worth Rs 34.5 lakh from two persons and arrested them in this connection yesterday.
The two arrested persons have been identified as Suan Thanga and Stephen Kama, residents of Aizawl in Mizoram. Captain Kishore Verma of 39 Assam Rifles told reporters in Silchar that they were taking the money from Badarpur in Karimganj district of Assam to Mizoram.
The recovered demonetized currency will be handed over to SBI today, sources said. In the Northeast, Scheduled Tribes permanently residing and earning their livelihood in and from the Sixth Schedule areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura are exempted from paying income tax.
They are entitled to claim exemption from tax in respect of income from any source arising therein and income by way of dividend or interest on securities. Many allege that attempts are being made by a group of people to convert their black money into white through tribals.
