The Myanmar Commander in Chief General Min Aung Hlaing has clarified that Tatmadaw will perform its tasks within the legal framework of the laws while safeguarding the existing constitution of 2008.

The statement by the Myanmar Military Tatmadaw comes against the backdrop of concern that the military may not accept the results of the November 8 elections in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) headed by the State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi got a thumping majority.

The military supported opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has challenged the results of the Nov. 8 elections levelling allegations of mismanagement and lack of transparency in conducting the allegations. It has asked for re-election in the country.

Earlier on Wednesday, January 27, addressing the senior officer trainees of National Defence College, Army Chief General Min Aung Hlaing had said that all needed to abide by the constitution and if one does not follow the law, such law must be revoked.

The Tatmadaw in its statement issued on Saturday clarified that the remarks of the Commander in Chief of Defence Services General Min Aung Hlaing on January 27 have been wrongly interpreted without considering the full text of the speech.

The statement by Tatmadaw comes a day after the UN Secretary General Antonio Guetress and 17 Western Embassies in Myanmar had issued a statement urging all to adhere to democratic norms and for the peaceful convening of the parliament to elect the President and the Speakers.

The NLD spokesperson told Reuters that the military’s statement was a suitable explanation. He said that the party wanted the military to accept peoples verdict as reflected in the union election results.
