Roy Mathew, an Army soldier who featured in a recent video on the abuse of the Sahayak system in military camps; has been found dead.

The soldier had been missing from the Artillery Centre in Deolali since February 25 after the sting video went viral.

According to local police, Mathew’s decomposed body implied that he might have died three days ago. The soldier was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in Deolali Cantonment in Maharashtra’s Nashik district.

Deolali camp police have registered a case of accidental death under Section 174 of the CrPC. Mathew’s body has been handed over to the Army by police after preliminary formalities. 33 year old Mathew hails from Kerala’s Kollam district.

A few days back, a video had surfaced featuring Mathew with his face covered and narrating the woes of soldiers. The sting operation had led to criticism of the British-era Sahayak (orderly) system.
