Another Hindu priest hacked to death in Bangladesh, early today in Kastasagar village of Sadar Upazilla in Jhenaidah district, northwestern part of the country. The killing comes hardly a month after another priest was similarly hacked in the same district.
Shyamananda Das,50, serving the Radha Madan Gopal temple for the last 3 years, was picking flowers for the puja in front of the shrine, when 3 motor-cycle bound assailants attacked him with sharp weapons. He died on the spot.
Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police said Sheikh Atlaf Hossain said, the killing resembles the recent attacks on minority community members, secular bloggers & writers and rights activists. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the crime. Bangladesh has seen a string of brutal killings recently with over 50 people hacked to death during the last 18 months.
While IS has claimed responsibility for most of the killings, Bangladesh has linked them to home-grown militant groups like the JMB and Ansarullah Bangla Team as well as the opposition. Around 197 suspected JMB militants were among 11,000 arrested last month during a anti-militant crackdown.
