BJP President Amit Shah got elected unopposed for the top post of the party for second term today. He will remain party president till 2019.

On the occasion, Union Ministers including Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu, Manohar Parrikar, BJP ruled states chief ministers, party office bearers and other leaders were present at the party headquarters. They presented garlands and bouquets to Mr Shah and congratulated him. Several party workers also gathered at party headquarters, where bands were playing to celebrate Mr Shah’s second term.

Party sources said, his election was virtually a formality. Proposals in support of Mr Shah’s candidature was submitted to party’s election in-charge Avinash Raikhanna by units of different states including Maharastra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Venkaiah Naidu and others have also proposed the name of Mr Shah. Chief Ministers of BJP ruled states, senior party leaders and Union Ministers are present at party headquarters in Delhi.

Mr. Shah’s current tenure ended yesterday and the new term will be his first full-term lasting three years. Currently, he was completing the remaining tenure of Rajnath Singh, who had demitted the post after joining the Union cabinet in May 2014. During Mr Shah’s term as party President, the BJP came to power in Maharashtra, Haryana, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir, but also suffered defeats in Delhi and Bihar assembly elections.

BJP Parliamentary board is scheduled to meet on Thursday to welcome Mr Shah as new party chief.
