All important cities in Maharashtra will be brought under cctv surveillance step by step Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Saturday. He was speaking at the inauguration function of ‘CCTV-based surveillance system for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad’.

In this system 1,250 CCTV cameras installed at 440 locations would cover 650 sq km area around important junctions, roads and sensitive establishments in the jurisdiction of Pune police commissionerate. Pune is the first city in the state to have such a CCTV-based surveillance system.

Pune is one of the most terror-sensitive cities in the country, with important defence establishments. The city has also witnessed a few terror strikes. In the view of terror incident, the demand for CCTV cover was put forth and then taken up with the government.

The system has already started giving good results. 200 cases of theft, accidents and traffic violations are detected in the city using the CCTV footage.
