Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has tweeted a video of some policemen thrashing a few men seemingly in a lock up.
Akhilesh Yadav captioned the video, “Questions should be raised on such a lock up, otherwise there is no justice in the confession.”
Yadav went on to add that Uttar Pradesh ranks first when it comes to number of deaths in police custody. He also alleged that UP tops in human rights abuses and leads in oppression of Dalits.
The video had surfaced on social media on Saturday. It was alleged that it showed policemen at Saharanpur Kotwali thrashing protesters accused of rioting and stone-pelting in the district.
After the tweet went viral, Saharanpur SSP Akash Tomar said that the video is not from the district. “I have not seen the video yet but it is not from Saharanpur. I am not sure from where it is or what’s the context. We will look into matter and take action if any cop is found guilty.”
The video tweeted by Akhilesh Yadav surfaced soon after UP Police cracked down on protesters involved in the violent demonstrations that erupted in several districts of the state on Friday.
Police said they have arrested 255 people from various districts in the state in connection with Friday’s violence. A total of 13 FIRs have been lodged in connection with the protests.
On Friday, protesters took to the streets demanding the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Jain and expelled Delhi unit media in-charge Naveen Jindal for their objectionable remarks about Prophet Muhammad
