Terming the victory senior party leader Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha polls a lesson for the BJP, the Congress today said money, muscle and manipulation could not win in the election.

Reacting to Mr Patel’s victory in the RS elections, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said, ‘The defeat is a lesson for the BJP and they are free to approach any court.

Reacting to the victory of Mr Patel, senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, ‘Money, muscle and manipulation could not win in the Gujarat RS election. BJP can break a few weak Congress MLAs, but BJP cannot break the Congress party.

Another senior Congress leader Kapil Sibbal alleged that the BJP tried its level best to defeat Ahmad Patel but of no use. He said at the end, the truth has won. JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav also described the victory of Ahmad Patel as victory of truth. Echoing same view, Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agrawal said truth cannot be defeated in a democracy.

Meanwhile BJP today said it is exploring legal option over Election Commission’s decision to reject the two votes of Congress MLAs who had cross voted in the Gujarat Rajya Sabha polls and later allegedly shown their ballets to unauthorized persons.

Talking to reporters outside Parliament, party leader Kailash Vijayvargiya said he does not want to comment on poll panel but the nation wants to know under what circumstances such a decision was taken.

He also took a dig at the Congress saying the opposition party should introspect why its candidate somehow managed to win.

Thank God for the EC: Sonia on Ahmed Patel victory

Expressing pleasure over the victory of Mr Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha elections, Congress president Sonia Gandhi thanked the Election Commission for its decision to disqualify votes of two Congress MLAs who showed their ballots to BJP president Amit Shah.

“Thank God for the Election Commission,” Ms Gandhi said on the victory of Mr Patel.
The Congress had yesterday approached the EC to demand the disqualification of votes of the two MLAs who showed their ballot to the BJP president.

In its order, the EC last night declared the votes of the two MLAs invalid, thus providing a shot in the arm to the Congress.
