The Sensex and the Nifty today recovered around 0.9 percent. Both stocks gained amid positive cues from the global equity markets. The Sensex closed above 58,300 and the Nifty settled above 16,750.
The BSE Sensex climbed 497 points, or 0.89 percent to trade at 56,319. The NSE Nifty also rose 157 points, or 0.94 percent, to trade at 16,771.
In the broader market at BSE, the Mid-Cap and the Small-Cap indices performed better than the Sensex. The Mid-Cap gained 1.43 percent and the Small-Cap index rose 1.29 percent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 23 companies climbed while seven fell. HCL climbed 3.9 percent followed by Wipro which surged 3.7 percent. Tata Steel climbed three percent and Tech Mahindra added 2.3 percent. On the other hand, the Power grid declined 1.5 percent and Axis Bank tumbled 1.3 percent. Bajaj Finance and SBI, both ended 0.8 percent down.
In sectoral indices, all 19 sectors gained. Metal sector stocks were the top gainer as the index climbed three percent followed by Consumer Durables which rose 2.2 percent. The basic Materials sector index added 2.1 percent.
The overall breadth of the BSE trade was positive as shares of 2239 companies gained while 1095 fell. Shares of 97 companies remained unchanged.
