Explosions and gunfire echoed through Kabul after near-simultaneous Taliban assaults on two security compounds today. At least 15 people were killed and 50 injured in the carnage.

The interior ministry said, a suicide car bomber struck an Afghan police precinct in western Kabul and a gun battle ensued.

Five minutes later a suicide bomber blew himself up at the gates of an Afghan intelligence agency branch in eastern Kabul as another attacker was gunned down while trying to enter the compound. The Taliban claimed responsibility for both assaults.

The health ministry said the wounded, some of them in critical condition, had been rushed to hospitals. The health ministry said more casualties are feared as the ambulances are on their way.
Fighting at police headquarters, not far from a military training school, lasted for several hours with gunmen barricaded inside the building.
Najib Danesh, a spokesman for the interior ministry, said the attack was neutralised by late afternoon and security forces were conducting checks of the area.
