NEW DELHI: (AMN) The Defence Ministry is all set to take stern action against those found guilty in the Mumbai Adarsh Housing Society scam.
The Army, Navy and Defence estates have already submitted their report to the Ministry in this regard. The senior officials of the ministry are going through the report. After full study of the report action against guilty would be recommended and it would form the basis of action to be taken by the government.
In a related development, former Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor this evening met Defence Minister A.K. Antony. Defence sources said, Gen. Kapoor is understood to have explained his position. He is also understood to have informed the Minister that he had immediately surrendered the allotment of an apartment in his name, along with another former Army Chief Gen N C Vij and former Navy Chief Admiral Madhavendra Singh, soon after learning that there was a provision for Kargil martyrs in the housing society.
Meanwhile Army Chief General V K Singh on Thursday asserted that action would be taken against those found guilty irrespective of who they are. General Singh is worried over allegations against top military officers including some former services chiefs in the Mumbai housing scam.
Gen Singh said he was "extremely saddened" over the allegations which have "shamed" his force and its image taken a beating. ‘As an institution we’ve taken a beating’, said Army Chief to a TV channel.
He said that action would be taken against those found involved in the scam irrespective of who they are. “Action would be taken only after the defence ministries study the whole report” he said adding army would now give more attention toward these malpractices in the service.
The Adrash society, the 100-metre tall building had reportedly come up on a 6490 sqare meters plot of land that was originally in the Army’s possession since the early 1940s. The army was using it for training purposes till 2000, when the land was reportedly transferred to the housing society for construction of the apartment building.
