Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees each for the next of kin of those killed and 50 thousand rupees to the seriously injured in floods in Gujarat.
Mr Modi was addressing the media at Ahmedabad Airport after undertaking aerial survey of flood-affected areas of the State.
The Prime Minister also announced an immediate additional assistance of 500 crore rupees under the State Disaster Relief Fund. He assured the people of the State that Centre stands shoulder to shoulder with them at this difficult time.
Mr Modi said everything possible will be done to help the farmers, who have suffered immensely due to the floods. He said relief work will be further intensified. The Prime Minister said he has taken stock of the situation arising out of floods, adding that officers from the Government of India will assist in short term and long term measures.
According to an official, the Prime Minister also reviewed the flood relief operations at a high level meeting. The meeting was attended by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and other senior ministers and officials.
During the meeting, Mr Modi was given an overview of the extent of damage caused by floods, and the relief operations being undertaken. The Prime Minister instructed all agencies involved in relief operations, to put in their best possible effort for immediate rescue and relief. He emphasized the importance of cleanliness, hygiene and health, and said these aspects should also be accorded the highest priority.
Mr Modi said insurance companies including those dealing with crop insurance may be advised to organise assessment of damage to assets and crops and quickly and take steps for early settlement of claims. He also called for immediate restoration of water supply, electricity and communication links.
