US President, Donald Trump has claimed credit for the pressure being placed on Qatar by Gulf neighbours who accuse it of supporting terrorism in the region. He said his recent visit to Saudi Arabia was already paying off and the development might mark the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism.
In a tweet yesterday, Mr Trump said his Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off and the Arab leaders said they would take a hard line on funding, extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar.
Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UAE, Yemen, Libya’s eastern-based government and the Maldives have all cut diplomatic and other ties with Qatar.
Meanwhile, Pentagon has renewed praise of Qatar for hosting U.S. forces and its enduring commitment to regional security.
Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said he consider Qatar a host to US’s very important base at al Udeid. Some 8,000 U.S. military personnel are stationed at al Udeid in Qatar, the largest U.S. air base in the Middle East and a staging ground for U.S.-led strikes on the Islamic State militant group that has seized parts of Syria and Iraq.
