US Vice-President Mike Pence has pledged to strengthen security ties with Indonesia to ensure freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and to fight terrorism.

Pence met Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta today after earlier visits to South Korea and Japan on his 4-nation tour of the Asia-Pacific. The pair spoke at a news conference after their meeting.

Pence said the US will continue to work with Indonesia to defend the rule of law that is the foundation of Southeast Asia’s peace and prosperity. He also said the US will uphold the freedoms of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea.
