Last rites of AIDMK leader Jayalalithaa performed with full state honour with thousands paid tearful adieu to ‘Amma’.  Jayalalithaa was buried in a sandalwood casket next to the memorial of her mentor, MG Ramachandran at Chennai’s Marina Beach.

Last rites were performed by the politician’s long-time companion Sasikala Natarajan, who also received the national flag that had draped Ms Jayalalithaa’s body.

Jayalalithaa, 68, died at 11.30 on Monday night, after a huge cardiac arrest the day before.

A sea of humanity has gathered in Chennai and paid final respects their beloved leader late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who breathed her last on Monday.

The mortal remains of the iconic figure of Tamil Nadu politics were kept at Rajaji Hall in Chennai for the public to pay homage. Draped in her favourite green colour saree, Jayalalithaa’s body was taken from her Poes Garden residence early Monday morning to Rajaji Hall.

Hundreds and thousands of supporters queued up to have a last glimpse of the leader popular among the masses.

Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and his ministerial colleagues, MPs and MLAs and senior state government officials were among the first to pay homage to Jayalalithaa. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu also paid tributes to the late leader. Legendary film star Rajanikanth also paid tributes to Jayalalithaa.

Jayalalithaa passed away at the Apollo Hospitals in Chennai at 11.30 on Monday night after waging a grim battle for life since her hospitalisation on September 22.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid homage to Jayalalithaa by offering flowers at Rajaji Hall in Chennai.

Earlier the President, the Vice President and the Prime Minister expressed grief over the demise of Jayalalithaa. Several Union Ministers and leaders have mourned the death of Jayalalithaa.

Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day today as a mark of respect to J. Jayalalithaa.
