Erdogan says military coup attempt over

90 people killed, more than 1,000 injured across Turkey during coup attempt

At least 60 persons have been killed and 336 arrested in a failed coup attempt by a section of Armed Forces inTurkey today morning. They wanted to overthrow the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He rushed to Istanbul, who was holidaying on the coast when the coup occurred.

Mr Erdogan appeared on television with his supporters and addressed the nation at the airport saying that the attempt has been thwarted and his Government has regained control. Mr Erdogan said, it was an act of treason by a minority faction of the armed forces which targeted the unity and integrity of the nation. He said, the plotters will pay a heavy price.

Turkish officials said that 29 COLONELS AND 5 GENERALS have been removed from their posts.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said, the situation is largely under control. He said, it was an act of rebellion by followers of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen. A US-based organisation close to Gulen has, however, has denied any involvement.

Earlier, local media reported that a statement from the group on Television said that peace council now ran the country and there was a curfew and martial law. The group said, the move had been made in order to restore constitutional order and democracy.

United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appealed for calm. Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, Turkey was a valued Nato ally. He also called for calm and restraint and full respect for Turkey’s democratic institutions.

United States has called on all parties in Turkey to support President Erdogan’s government against a coup attempt.

Japn Prime Minister said that Turkety’s democracy must be respected.He hoped that peace and order are restored.

China called on Turkey to restore order and stability as soon as possible after a coup attempt, state television cited China’s foreign ministry as saying today.
