The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu gets operational. Nuclear Power Corporation of India chairman and managing director SK Sharma said that 1,000 Megawatt plants attained criticality last night.
He said, power generation will be stepped up to full capacity of 1000 Megawatt soon. The atomic reactor will provide electricity to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and Karnataka.
The second unit of Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant has attained criticality at 8.56 last night. The fission reaction in the second unit will be constantly monitored by AER B experts and the unit will be synchronized within a month.
At first 250 mega watt power will be generated and this will be increased step by step and will reach the full capacity of 1000 mega watt in three months.
Already 1000 mega watt power is being generated from the first unit of Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Till now 10,006 million units of electricity has been generated from the first unit according to site director R S Sundar.
The Kudankulam nuclear reactors have been built with Russian expertise and work on third and fourth reactors will be started next year.
