A Delhi court today granted bail to JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya in the JNU sedition case.
Additional Sessions Judge, Reetesh Singh granted the relief to the two accused on furnishing of a personal bond of Rs 25,000 each with one surety of the like amount. The Judge also noted that the duo should not not leave the country without its prior permission.
Umar and Anirban, who are lodged in jail since February 23, had sought bail on the ground of parity with JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, saying he has already been granted bail and the incident did not attract charges of sedition. The police had arrested Umar and Anirban for allegedly organising the controversial event at JNU on February 9.
They had been been arrested in a sedition case over a controversial event at the JNU campus. Khalid and Anirban had allegedly organised a controversial event at JNU on 9th of February where anti-India slogans were said to have been raised. The police claimed that around 22 people present at the JNU event, including some outsiders, have been identified after the joint interrogation of the both students.
Khalid and Anirban were earlier sent to three days’ police remand on February 24, after their midnight surrender and subsequent arrest in the case. JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar is also under arrest in the same case.
