More than two lakh fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry continued their strike for the second day today. The fishermen are urging the government to secure the release of 75 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalaithaa had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week to take action through diplomatic channels to secure the release of fishing boats from Lanka. Fishermen have said that they will be intensifying their protest by blockading the Karaikal port on Friday.
The fishermen from Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Puducherry and Karaikal are on strike from yesterday. They urge the government to secure the release of 75 fishing boats detained by Sri Lanka.
More than two lakh fishermen in the region are on strike and this has badly affected the families in the coastal hamlets. The fishermen are also asking for compensation for 18 fishing boats fully damaged and sunk in sea. The fishermen are urging the government to find a lasting solution to the problem and allow them to fish in traditional fishing zones.
