The Hyderabad Central University today revoked the suspension of four students four days after research scholar Rohit Vemula committed suicide, even as protest against central government particularly HRD minister Smirti Irani is going on in different part of the country.
These four students along with Rohit Vemulawere suspended earlier from accessing hostel library and cafe in the University campus. The Executive Committee has held an emergency meeting this morning and took the decision to revoke the suspension on the four students who are on hunger strike.
The Dean of the University later in a release said the decision was taken keeping in view the extraordinary situation prevailed on the campus. The decision incidentally come after a dozen faculty and officers belonging to SC and ST Community put in their resignation from the administrative posts they are holding. University Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao appealed to students and faculty to maintain harmony on the campus and repose confidence in the internal mechanism and get back to their normal work.
Congress today said the belated decision of Hyderabad Central University to revoke the suspension of four dalit scholars proves the anti-poor, anti-dalit agenda of University authorities, BJP and ABVP. In a statement, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said Rohith Vemula would not have committed suicide had this decision been taken earlier. He alleged that Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Irani yesterday justified the suspension of five dalit scholars to defend the illegal intervention by Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya.
Mr Surjewala said the decision to revoke suspension establishes the illegal and unconstitutional pressure used by HRD Ministry leading to the suspension. He demanded immediate sacking of the HRD and Labour Ministers, and Vice Chancellor of the University. He also demanded that the entire matter be investigated by sitting judge of the High Court.
Meanwhile, NDA ally LJP today sought an independent probe by CBI or some other agency into the incident of suicide by a dalit student in Hyderabad University. Talking to reporters in New Delhi , party leader Chirag Paswan, said there is a need to find out what led to Rohith Vemula to take this extreme step. He ,however, dismissed the opposition demand for resignation of Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandatru Dattatreya over the issue.
