Union Health Minister J P Nadda has said that an additional 1,700 beds will be added in the existing capacity of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi to accommodate more patients. In reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Health Minister said, besides AIIMS, the capacity of Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi will also be strengthen by adding 1,300 new beds.

He said, both AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital receive more than 9 thousand OPD patients per day. Mr. Nadda said the number of patients visiting the central government hospitals for treatment is much more as compared to their handling capacity in terms of number of beds, manpower and other resources. He also said, the capacities of RML hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College will also be increased.

The Minister informed the House that Online Registration System has been introduced this year from first of July and 11 central government hospitals are using this facility.

Replying to supplementaries, Mr Nadda emphasized that government accords a very high priority for increasing donation of cadaver organs to bridge the gap between the demand and supply. He said there is a huge gap between the demand for and supply of human organs for transplantation.

The Minister said government is keen to promote donation of organs from deceased persons and has sought suggestions from public at large and other stakeholders. Mr Nadda said the importance of organ donation has been highlighted by Prime minister’s Mann ki Baat programme in All India Radio. He said the government has also sanctioned financial assistance for establishing four Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Assam and Chandigarh to carry out awareness and training of transplant coordinators.
