Minister of State for Home, Kiren Rijiju today said debate on rising intolerance in the country was misplaced and whole society needs to come together and address these issues. The Minister’s comments came following actor Aamir Khan’s remarks on intolerance.
The actor had said at an award ceremony yesterday that he was alarmed by the number of incidences of intolerance and his wife Kiran Rao had wondered if they should move out of India. Mr Rijiju said records show that number of incidents of communal violence in country have come down since NDA came to power.
Coming in support of the Bollywood star, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said the government should reach out to people instead of branding all those who question the government and the Prime Minister as unpatriotic, anti national or motivated. In a tweet, Mr Gandhi said this is the only way to solve problems in India, and not by bullying or threatening.
BJP today said that some isolated extreme incidents should not be allowed to define India and took a dig at Aamir Khan wife’s suggestion to leave India. BJP spokesperson Mr Nalin Kohli said people move out for many reasons, including for saving taxes. He said that Aamir Khan’s last movie PK was a resounding box office success despite protests by some right wing outfits, stressing that it was a example of how tolerant Indian society is.
