Family of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri has demanded all files related to him be made public amid suspicion over his death in Uzbekistan Capital, Tashkent nearly 50 years ago.

Shastri’s son Anil Shastri, who is also a Congress leader, said when his father’s body arrived in India, it had blue marks and white spots, which indicated signs of foul play in his death on 11th January, 1966.

Speaking to a TV channel, Anil Shastri said no post-mortem was carried out on his father’s body, which could reveal the exact cause of death. Another son of the former Prime Minister Sunil Shastri, a BJP leader, also said that he has been requesting several Prime Ministers in the past to de-classify files pertaining to his father. The demand comes close on the heels of West Bengal government declassifying files on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

BJP leader and Shastri’s grand son Sidharth Nath Singh said the family has always believe that his death was unnatural and there is need for a proper investigation into it. He said after Shastri death, his stomach was cleaned up at that point of time but there was no postmortem or autopsy report, which has raised serious questions. Mr Singh also demanded that the last chapter of Shastri’s life should speak truth.
