In a development that could reshape the political landscape of Bihar, senior BJP leader Samrat Choudhary is all set to take over as the state’s Chief Minister, marking a historic moment as he is poised to become the first CM from the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar. The party announced on Tuesday that Choudhary, currently serving as Deputy Chief Minister, is expected to take oath on April 15, succeeding long-time leader Nitish Kumar.

The transition signals a significant shift in Bihar politics, where Bharatiya Janata Party has traditionally played a supporting role in coalition governments led by regional parties. With this move, the BJP appears ready to take direct control in a state long dominated by leaders like Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav.

From Political Legacy to Leadership

Samrat Choudhary’s rise reflects both legacy and strategic positioning. Born into a politically influential family, he is the son of former six-time MLA Shakuni Chaudhary and ex-legislator Parvati Devi. This background gave him early exposure to grassroots politics and electoral dynamics in Bihar.

He began his political career with the Rashtriya Janata Dal in 1999 and quickly made his mark, winning the Parbatta विधानसभा seat in 2000. He also served as a minister in the government led by Rabri Devi, gaining administrative experience early in his career.

Strategic Shifts and BJP Rise

Choudhary’s political journey is marked by key transitions. After years in the RJD, he joined Janata Dal (United) in 2014 and later aligned with the BJP in 2017—a move that proved decisive for his career. Within a few years, he rose rapidly through the party ranks, becoming Bihar BJP president in 2023 and later Deputy CM in January 2024 under Nitish Kumar’s leadership.

Known as a prominent OBC face, Choudhary has played a crucial role in expanding the BJP’s social base in Bihar, particularly among backward वर्गों—an area traditionally dominated by regional parties.

Political Significance and Challenges Ahead

His elevation to the CM post is being seen as part of BJP’s broader strategy to strengthen its independent foothold in key Hindi heartland states ahead of future elections. Analysts believe his grassroots connect, organisational skills, and caste outreach could help the party consolidate its position in Bihar.

However, the road ahead may not be entirely smooth. Choudhary has faced controversies, including allegations related to discrepancies in election affidavits and a past criminal case dating back to the 1990s. Opposition parties are likely to intensify attacks on these matter as he assumes office.

A New Chapter for Bihar

If sworn in as scheduled, Samrat Choudhary’s appointment will mark the beginning of a new political chapter in Bihar—one where the BJP transitions from a coalition partner to the leading force in governance. All eyes are now on how he navigates governance challenges, coalition dynamics, and the complex caste equations that define Bihar’s politics.
