“Blended learning, also known as hybrid learning, is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods.”

The Bangladesh government is set to introduce a blended learning model in selected reputed schools in metropolitan and city corporation areas from next week, combining physical classes with online lessons.

Announcing the move at a press briefing at the International Mother Language Institute in the capital, education minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said: “Under the proposed schedule, students will attend physical classes on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday, while lessons on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday will be conducted online.” “We are planning three days of in-person classes and three days online,” he added.

The minister said the system would initially be introduced only in metropolitan and city corporation areas and not across all schools.

“It is not a pandemic-era measure. We are not enforcing it forcibly. It is intended for well-established schools with large student populations, particularly those where many students commute by car,” he said, adding that not all metropolitan cities are included in the plan.

He also said teachers would remain present at their respective institutions even while conducting online classes. The government, he added, would take steps to address technical challenges, including improving internet connectivity and Wi-Fi facilities. “No decision will be imposed in a way that disrupts the education system,” he said.
