The Secretaries-General of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha held their first formal meeting on Thursday to examine the proposed notice by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its INDIA bloc partners seeking the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), but failed to reach any consensus, leaving the matter in limbo.
The notice, which has been pending with the Secretariats of both Houses for nearly twenty days, has seen no forward movement so far. Despite the high-level deliberations, no decision has been taken on the next course of action.
According to highly placed sources, the senior officials from both Houses dwelled in detail on the procedural and legal aspects, including the counters surrounding the notice for the removal of the CEC. However, the discussions did not result in any common ground.
With no agreement emerging from the meeting, no further action has been initiated, effectively placing the opposition-backed move in “cold storage” for now.
The development highlights the procedural and constitutional complexities involved in acting on such a sensitive notice against a sitting Chief Election Commissioner, requiring careful scrutiny before any formal steps can be taken.
