Abu Dhabi— The United Arab Emirates’ air defence systems intercepted and engaged 20 ballistic missiles and 37 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched from Iran on March 28, according to an official statement.

Authorities said the interceptions are part of the broader response to what they described as ongoing Iranian attacks targeting the country, Reports WAM.

Since the start of the attacks, UAE air defence systems have successfully engaged 398 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,872 drones, underscoring the scale of the aerial threat faced by the country.

The attacks have resulted in multiple casualties. Officials confirmed that two members of the UAE Armed Forces were killed while carrying out their national duty. In addition, a Moroccan civilian working under contract with the armed forces also lost his life.

Civilian casualties were also reported, with eight people killed, including nationals from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Palestine and India.

Authorities said 178 people were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to severe. The wounded included individuals from a wide range of nationalities, reflecting the UAE’s diverse expatriate population.

Among those injured were nationals from the UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Uganda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Comoros, Türkiye, Iraq, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Ghana, Indonesia, Sweden and Tunisia.

Officials did not immediately provide additional details on the locations targeted or the extent of infrastructure damage but said the country’s defence systems continue to remain on high alert.
