CPN-UML Cadres Protest in Kathmandu Valley After Arrest of KP Sharma Oli

AMN

Following the arrest of UML party Chairman KP Sharma Oli, cadres of the CPN-UML have taken to the streets in anger in Kathmandu Valley. In protest of the Chairman’s arrest, the mass organizations affiliated with the UML began demonstrations by burning tires in front of the District Court in Babar Mahal, Kathmandu.

Several mass organizations of CPN-UML supporters jointly started a protest march from Maitighar Mandala. When the demonstrators attempted to move towards the restricted area, the police tried to stop them. During this exchange, there was a brief scuffle between the police and the demonstrators, and the situation became tense.

Although the police dispersed the protesters, they are continuing to move forward in groups. After the procession, which started from Maitighar towards New Baneshwor, reached Babar Mahal, the cadres blocked traffic by burning tires on the road. Chanting slogans fiercely against the government, they are demanding the immediate release of their Chairman Oli. A large number of security personnel have currently been deployed in the Babar Mahal and Maitighar areas.

Former Nepal PM K P Sharma Oli arrested over Gen Z protest crackdown

Nepal’s Former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli was arrested today over Gen Z protest crackdown last year. The move comes a day after the newly formed government of Balendra Shah implemented the probe commission report on the Gen Z protest that rocked the nation last year. Oli, also CPN-UML chairperson, was arrested at the Gundu area of Bhaktapur district, 12 km east of Kathmandu.

Former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak has also been arrested from his residence at Katunje of Suryabinayak Municipality in Bhaktapur district. Both Oli and Lekhak have been arrested on charges of their involvement in suppressing the Gen Z movement in September last year, in which 76 people, including around two dozen youths, were killed.

The probe commission formed to investigate the incident surrounding the Gen Z movement has recommended legal action against Oli and Lekhak, among others, under criminal offence.  Nepal’s newly formed government, led by Balendra Shah, in its first cabinet meeting yesterday, decided to immediately implement the recommendations made by the probe commission. K P Oli was taken to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital for medical examination soon after the detention.
