Bangladesh home minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday said the process was underway to bring back the accused in the July uprising leader Osman Hadi murder case who are currently absconding in India under the prisoner exchange agreement.

He made the statement after placing wreaths at the Rajarbagh Police Memorial in Dhaka to pay tribute to police personnel martyred in the 1971 Liberation War on the occasion of Independence and National Day.

Responding to a question from journalists on the handover of the accused from India, the minister said, “A formal request has been sent through diplomatic channels via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring back the accused in the Osman Hadi murder case. The process of handing them over to Bangladesh under the prisoner exchange agreement is ongoing.”

At the event, Ahmed also spoke about the beginning of Bangladesh’s Liberation War. Referring to the events of March 25, 1971, he said, “On the night of March 25, 1971, the first massacre began at Rajarbagh Police Lines. It was in this context that the declaration of independence came. Then Major Ziaur Rahman, upon hearing of the massacre, declared a revolt in Chattogram and on March 27 formally announced independence from the Kalurghat radio station, seeking support from the international community.” He described this as the “true history” of Bangladesh’s independence.

Remembering the sacrifices of the police personnel killed in the war, the home minister said, “The Liberation War began with the bloodshed of police members at Rajarbagh. The nation will remember their sacrifice with deep respect forever.”
