Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday chaired a special meeting at the Secretariat to decide on necessary steps to tackle the fuel situation amid rising global oil prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

The meeting was held in the morning at the Cabinet Division office in the Secretariat, with the Prime Minister in the chair, his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon said.

After the special meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan said no decision had been taken on increasing fuel prices. While briefing the media on government activities on Wednesday, March 25, he said, “There is no shortage of fuel in the country, nor do we think we will face a shortage.”

Swapan said the meeting was convened to discuss measures to address the fuel situation in the country following global disruption.

Referring to the fallout from the disruption at the Strait of Hormuz amid the US-Israel war with Iran, he said a fuel crisis had emerged across the world, particularly in countries dependent on imports for energy generation.

He said the minister and state minister for power, energy and mineral resources were handling the situation on the Prime Minister’s direction and had not issued any instruction to raise prices. Swapan added that fuel prices in Bangladesh remain lower than those in neighbouring countries.

However, he said panic buying had started in the country because of misinformation circulating in traditional media and on social media, creating pressure on the government. He urged media personnel to raise awareness against panic buying.
