Former Bangladesh water resources minister and Awami League leader Ramesh Chandra Sen died on Saturday after falling ill at Dinajpur District Jail, jail authorities said. He was 86. Sen, a former member of parliament from Thakurgaon-1, became unwell around 9 am and was rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 9:29 am. “Ramesh Chandra Sen was brought to Dinajpur District Jail on August 17.

He was a division prisoner and had been ill even before being transferred here,” Jail Superintendent Farhad Sarkar said. “When his condition suddenly deteriorated, he was taken to the hospital. We later received news of his death.”
Masud Rana, ward master at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital, said, “He was brought to the hospital in an ailing condition. The on-duty physician Anupam Pal declared him brought dead at 9:29 am.”

Born on April 30, 1940, in the Ruhia Union of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, Sen served as water resources minister from 2009 to 2014. He was first elected to parliament in a 1997 by-election and later won seats in the 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections.

A presidium member and adviser of the Awami League, Sen was arrested from his home following the mass student–public uprising in 2024 and had been in custody since. The Awami League is currently banned from political activities.
