A day after a Hindu man was lynched to death in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district, the Mohammad Yunus-led interim government on Friday said the killing was not communal, claiming the victim, Amrit Mondal alias Samrat, was a wanted criminal involved in serious offences, including murder and extortion.

In a statement, the government said it had taken note of the spread of “misleading information” on social media over the incident in the Pangsha police station area. “Rather, it arose from a violent situation stemming from extortion and criminal activities”.

While condemning the killing, the interim government said it does not support mob violence. “The government strongly condemns this killing… It does not support any form of extrajudicial activity, mob violence, or unlawful conduct under any circumstances. Legal action will be taken against all those directly or indirectly involved,” it said.

The government also warned against projecting the incident as communal.

The incident comes days after Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and his body set on fire in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy, an act the Yunus-led interim government had condemned. The back-to-back killings have heightened concerns over mob violence and the safety of minorities amid ongoing unrest in the country.
