MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has sent notices to 15 top bureaucrats whose kin own flats in the controversial Adarsh Housing Society in south Mumbai asking them to explain the source of funds.
Maharashtra’s Chief Secretary, J.P. Dange informed that the bureaucrats, some of them senior IAS officials, have been questioned about their source of funds for the luxurious flats. Some of the people, who have been issued notices, include former BMC commissioner Jairaj Phatak, former Urban Development Secretary Ramanand Tiwari, former Urban Development Deputy Secretary P. V. Deshmukh, and former Chief Secretary D. K. Shankaran. All of them have been asked to submit their replies within one week. Meanwhile, the income tax department has also issued notices to all the flat owners of Adarsh Society asking them to submit their income details. Adarsh Society initially meant for housing Kargil war veterans and widows has been in the eye of a storm for violation of environmental and land encroachment laws. The building may also face demolition if it does not reply satisfactorily to the show cause notice issued by the environment ministry.AIR
