University Grant Commission (UGC) is all set to allow students to pursue two full time degree programmes simultaneously. UGC Chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar in a virtual meeting with media said that students can pursue two academic programmes simultaneously in a physical mode either from same university or different universities.
Prof Kumar said, students can also pursue two academic programme in online mode simultaneously. He said, this will empower the students to acquire new knowledge and provide them flexibility. Prof. Jagadesh Kumar said, several component of the National Education Policy have been implemented across the country and UGC is trying to provide flexibility under the National Education Policy. The UGC Chairman said, guidelines in this regard will come into effect soon.
The dual degree option is not mandatory for any university/college and will only come into effect once statutory bodies at the university approve the UGC guidelines and facilitate the new system.
The ‘two-degree’ option will apply across all courses and combinations of courses provided the university statutory bodies permit so. The eligibility, admission and attendance criteria set by the varsity will have to be followed
He said it was up to the universities to work on time tables and exam schedules that do not clash amid such dual degree programmes. “The idea is to allow as much flexibility as possible to our students. It is also part of the larger implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 which advocates a multidisciplinary and flexible mode of education for all — opening up opportunities for students.
We have been in discussion with the Vice-Chancellors of various universities and we hope this flexibility will be allowed to students,” UGC chairmain said.
