Bangladesh has urged people to celebrate Christmas and the new year on a limited scale due to the continuing COVID 19 pandemic in the country. The Home Ministry issued a letter asking people to arrange public gatherings for social, cultural and religious purposes on a very limited scale following the health guidelines.

The law enforcement agencies held meetings at the district and Upazila levels with the concerned people to ensure that health guidelines are properly followed during the last week of the year coinciding with Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The Public Security Division of the government of Bangladesh sent the letter to the officials of local government and police. It pointed out that owing to the COVID 19 pandemic, all over the world, the celebrations relating to Christmas and the new year are being held inside homes on a limited scale following health rules.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh started the COVID 19 booster dose vaccination for the frontline workers on a trial basis from Sunday. Home Minister Zahid Maleque said that elderly people above 60 years of age can get booster vaccine doses by showing their vaccination card. For others, the booster dose campaign will start by the end of this month, said the minister.

The COVID 19 infection rate in Bangladesh remained low with 291 fresh cases of COVID 19 infection and 1 death reported yesterday. The sample positivity rate was reported to be 1.39 percent.

On December 9, two returning players of the Bangladesh Women Cricket team were found infected with the Omicron variant but no further cases of this variant has been reported since.
