Both Houses of Parliament have expressed outrage over the gruesome gang rape and murder case of veterinary doctor in Hyderabad and called for stringent punishment to the perpetrators.
Condemning the incident, members from different political parties in the Rajya Sabha demanded stringent punishment and change in the legal and police system to check the crime against women.
The Chairman, M. Venkaiah Naidu expressed serious concern over such incidents saying merely making laws is not enough. He said, Hyderabad incident is a disgrace.
Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said, the country and society must stand against such heinous crime. He said, there is need to sensitize people.
Ms Jaya Bachchan of Samajwadi Party demanded action against the security officer posted in the area where the Hyderabad rape incident happened. She called for stringent action against the perpetrators of the gruesome crime.
Mr Santanu Sen of TMC also demanded strict action against culprits. Echoing same view, Mr Sanjay Singh of Aam Adami Party said, merely framing laws is not enough to curb crime against women. Mr Manoj Jha of RJD stressed on the need to change the mindset of the people in the society. Ms Vijila Sathyanathan of AIADMK demanded to increase the number of fast track courts dealing with such incidents. Mr Amar Patnaik of BJD also highlighted the need to change the mindset of society.
Mr Naresh Gujral of Akali Dal drew the attention of the House towards the pendency of the cases in courts and delay in justice in such matters. Mr T.K. Rangarajan of CPI (M) urged the media to create awareness on crime against women.
The Lok Sabha unanimously condemned the brutal rape and killing and burning of a veterinary doctor in Telangana.
The government assured the Lower House that it is ready to discuss on the subject and is ready to frame laws stricter to punish the perpetrators of the crime in an expeditious manner.
Defence Minister Raj Nath Singh said the government is not averse to discuss on the issue, and also is ready to frame laws to punish the culprits. He said that he also share the same sentiments of the house that the accused should be punished with exemplary punishment.
Talking to reporters outside the parliament,Union Minister of State for Home Affairs G. Kishan Reddy said that speedy justice must be provided to the family of Hyderabad rape victim. Mr Reddy met with the officials of the State Government and the victim’s family members and has asked the State Government to speed up the investigation.
