India today confirmed their place in the World Cup semi-finals with a comfortable if not flawless win which eliminated spirited Bangladesh.

After Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul hit the highest opening partnership of the tournament, a fine 180, India ran out of steam to post a disappointing 314.

Bangladesh needed to win their final two games to have any chance of progressing to a first semi-final.

But despite another half century from Shakib al Hasan they fell short.

Earlier, electing to bat first, India scored 314 for 9 in the stipulated 50 overs. Rohit Sharma and K.L.Rahul opened India’s innings briskly to take the score to 180 when Rahul fell for 77. With his 104 today, Rohit Sharma became the first Indian cricketer to score 4 tons in a World Cup.

He also surpassed Australia’s David Warner to become the leading run-getter in the ongoing World Cup, amassing 544 runs so far as against Warner’s 516. This was also Rohit Sharma’s 26th ODI ton today which equalled Kumar Sangakkara’s record of scoring most runs in a World Cup edition.

Dinesh Karthik made his World Cup debut in this match, replacing Kedar Jadhav while Bhuvneshwar Kumar is in for Kuldeep Yadav.
For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman scalped 5 wickets.

Tomorrow, England and New Zealand head into their final World Cup group match at Chester-le-Street. The match will be played from 3 p.m.IST. The winner of tomorrow’s match would enter the semi-finals.
