The White House has said that US officials will hold more talks with their Chinese counterparts in a bid to end a trade standoff that has cast a shadow over the global economic outlook.

The pledge comes after the latest round of negotiations, which took place in Washington during the week, ended without a deal.

Top officials from the United States and China wrapped up the 3-day meeting on Friday. The discussions were attended by US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He.

The White House issued a statement to say the countries had made progress on numerous important issues, but that significant work remains.

The statement said the officials will remain in contact in an effort to resolve remaining issues.

The US has threatened to hit China with a new round of punitive tariffs if the countries cannot reach a deal.

It says it will keep its trade sanctions as they are until it can be sure that China will protect US intellectual property and keep other promises.

US President Donald Trump said that he did not want to predict that a deal would be reached.
